Jonas Noreika’s Memorial Plaque: A New Chapter of the Saga
With an unexpected turn of the events, on 5 September a new memorial plaque celebrating Jonas Noreika was placed on the façade of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. The previous memorial plaque was removed only on 9 August under initiative of the Mayor of Vilnius Remigijus Šimašius, in the midst of the controversy between supporters of Noreika’s memory, that consider him a national hero for his role in anti-Soviet resistance, and the Lithuanian Jewish community and several public history national and international organizations, that charge him with a primary role in the genocide of the Litvaks (the Lithuanian Jewry) during the Second World War. The new plaque was installed during a demonstration organized by the nationalist youth organization Pro Patria, with the support of veteran members of the Lithuanian Union of Freedom Fighters. Tellingly, the episode marks the deep rift between the Municipality of Vilnius, striving to promote a liberal and cosmopolitan image of the city, and the newly elected President of the Republic Gitanas Nausėda, who since his election has taken a clear stance in defense of the memory of anti-Soviet resistance.
