What Does It Mean to Do Public History in Asia

The conference “What Does It Mean to Do Public History in Asia,” co-hosted by University Chicago and the National University of Singapore, February 24-25, 2026, brought together about thirty scholars and practitioners from Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Hong Kong, and United States. The Conference pioneered the conversations on Asian Public History: how it is undertaken in the region, why, and for whom in such realms as oral history, media technology, heritage, and museum curation. The conference also aimed to support and advance on-going initiatives to build institutional capacity within the region that deepen how public history is taught and used in Asia, and to establish an Asian public history network in the region.
