Muñoz, C. (2021). History, Memory, and Violent Pasts in Latin America. Public History Weekly, 2021(8).

Abstract:
Latin American countries, peoples and cultures have experienced significant violence and injustice throughout their pasts. How historical thinking and the presentation of history to the public effect modern attitudes towards these occurrences is under discussion here, as well their associated effects on social change going forward. Muñoz asserts that truth commissions after violent or repressive periods in various Latin American territories have dealt with violations of human rights and persecution, but not the underlying prejudices and inequalities which lead to them. By contextualising this historical dialogue in the public arena, new perspectives can be gained to give a degree of nuance to democratic change in the modern world.

Abstract:
Can traditional museum practice adequately present cultural heritage to the modern public? Soto Labbe points out that Latin American heritage cannot be encompassed or represented in full by musealising material culture traditional ways, and there is an essential connection between what is being exhibited and surviving cultures. Discussed here is the multi-sensory nature or museum experiences, rich oral traditions or indigenous peoples, the inconsonance of culture and border, and increasing cultural tourism in Latin America. Here, it is suggested that Latin American museums take steps to adopt ethical approaches to the 552 surviving indigenous peoples in Latin America, and present the temporal context of objects and associated peoples or cultures. Furthermore, it is posited that along with significance to surviving associated cultures, inevitable globalisation warrants the access and meaningful transmission of exhibited culture for international or cosmopolitan viewers.

Abstract:
Monuments to historical events and figures are often, at face value, viewed as representations of a society’s united consensus on how their past is viewed. However, the efforts of Christina Fernández de Kirchner (Argentinian President from 2007-2015) to re-site Zocchi’s Monument to Christopher Columbus near the Casa Rosada, and replace it with Zerneri’s Monument to Juana Azurduy, show that such monuments, and the context in which they are shown, can be used to re-shape public sentiment around past events, and re-frame historical figures. In this article, Lerer discusses the political, social and even economic factors at play in the dispute around the two monuments, and how its participants, as well as the public, were thus stimulated to reflect on their past.

Abstract:
In 1989 the International Council of Museums resolved that museums should participate in both social discussion and social change. Despite this, in Brazil most museums have stagnated, with low levels of public visitation and engagement. This has in recent decades been prominently associated with inadequacy in education, funding and effort by institutions to transform museum practice. In 2001, Santos seeks to analyse how Brazilian museums are, or should be transforming to better engage with the public, and the existing attitudes and practices of both museum professionals and the visiting public. Museums are found to present narratives not different to the authoritarian and oversimplified themes presented in public monuments, and Santos identifies a severe lack in communication and engagement with the public, in a modern world inundated with communications. Thus, Brazilian museums are not carrying out their intended role of representing the past to the public, and will fail to do so until these issues are resolved.

Abstract:
The narrative of the Cuban Revolution of 1959 is firmly set in public record and imagination, with the circumstances in the country, before, during and shortly after the affair presented often with political and socially inclusive flavour. However, this publicly and politically driven narrative is at times incompatible with person testimonies of individuals who experienced the events. Hamilton examines the personal accounts of two women in the 1984, provided by Robaina, to emphasise this. The personal experiences shared by Violeta and Consuelo, two sex workers during the events, highlight not only the suffering of women in their profession, but the silence of the voice of women in the construction of historical narratives in Cuba, and the disconnect between the representation of public history and the experiences of members individual members of the public. Furthermore, the public movement and story of liberation and establishment of freedoms, is shown to overshadow and under-represent the coming-to-terms, rehabilitation, and transformation of those who were oppressed.
